Why does the ink industry prefer resin based inks over resin free inks?

When producing water-based ink, it is often divided into two production steps.

 1. Production of water-based ink (pigment paste)

2. Produce different types and colors of ink based on specific applications and printing processes

Unlike water-based coatings that use resin free pigment paste, water-based inks are mainly prepared using resin containing pigment pastes.

Resin containing color paste refers to the grinding of color paste mainly using dispersed resin.

Resin free pigment paste refers to grinding pigments using only

The main characteristics of resin containing pigment pastes are low cost and poor universality, while resin free pigment pastes are the opposite.

The dry film thickness of ink is only about 3-5 μ m, while the single dry film thickness of paint is about 20-30 μ m.

If you want to achieve the same pigment, the pigment content in the ink will be much higher than the proportion in the paint.

The content of organic pigments in water-based inks is generally between 10% -20%, while it is less in coatings

Pigment pastes account for a relatively high proportion in water-based inks, reaching 30% -50%, so most use resin based pigment pastes with lower costs.

However, the proportion of pigment paste in the coating is relatively small. On the one hand, the cost pressure is not very high, and on the other hand, due to the small amount added, it actually increases the requirement for universality. If there are many types and small quantities of pigment pastes, it is more recommended to purchase pigment pastes externally, which will have more advantages after comprehensive consideration.

In addition, from the perspective of dispersants, the price of dispersants used for grinding resin free pigment pastes is also much higher than that of dispersants containing resin pigment pastes.

Based on the above factors, cost is the main factor affecting the selection of resin based ink pastes.

(In some ink applications, resin free pigment paste is also required when high requirements are placed on ink viscosity, pigment concentration, and transparency.)
