Paper color is an important appearance index. In order to obtain the required color of paper, two methods are usually used: internal dyeing and surface dyeing. In-pulp dyeing is the most widely used dyeing method.

With the development of paper post-processing technology, the surface dyeing of paper has also been widely used.

However, the main dyes used in surface dyeing are acid dyes and basic dyes, with few direct dyes. Direct dyes are mainly used in the dyeing of paper pulp. It means that the molecule contains water-soluble groups (sulfonic acid groups or carboxyl groups) and hydroxyl or amino groups that can generate hydrogen bonds, soluble in water, and dyes have affinity for fibers. A type of dye that can be directly dyed on the fiber without a mordant.” The direct dyes currently used are divided into powder dyes and liquid dyes.
